WTMA commentary broadcast 12/11/07
When a 19-year-old gunman walked into a mall in Omaha, Nebraska last week and began shooting customers, no one had an answer to what might have prevented such a random act of senseless violence. When churchgoers were randomly shot in Colorado Springs Sunday, police still had no answers as to why someone would do such a thing. Neither of these incidents are the first of their sort, nor unfortunately will these instances be the last time innocent people are gunned down in cold blood for no good reason. As with Columbine High School shootings and Virginia Tech massacre, there will always be people in this world who want to inflict harm for its own sake and if this sort of sadism is not the definition of evil, then I don’t know what is. But when combating such evil men, it never ceases to amaze me that so many believe the answer is to disarm good men through gun control.
Gun control advocates have been known to argue that while cowboys fighting Indians and such might have been an appropriate era in which to carry a six-shooter, guns have no place in modern America. An early American cowboy, or even an Indian, might have used a firearm to defend his family, tribe or honor, but today we have nutcases who, without conscience, will murder random women, children and old people for no apparent reason. We simply can’t trust people with guns these days, because we can’t trust people period, they tell us. We live in an age of moral anarchy, where the consequences are becoming more violent and bizarre with each passing year.
But again I ask, what about good men? Why would any sane person want to disarm them? There was a time in this country when packing heat was as common as packing lunch. Not only would our ancestors have been outraged at the notion of having to seek permission from their government to own a gun, but often the government itself was outraged by those who didn’t own guns. A state like Virginia even used to prosecute men for failing to carry a firearm at all times, with particular mandates to make sure guns were brought to church.
The only possible protection in bizarre situations like the recent mall and church shootings, would be constant police protection, which is impossible, or a society in which it was a given that most or even a significant portion of the population was packing heat. For example, does anyone believe the mall shooter in Nebraska would have got as far he did at say, the Ladson Flea Market? According to gun control advocates, gun shows should be the most violent places on earth by the mere presence of firearms, which is all the proof one needs to realize that arguments for gun control are as absurd as they are dangerous.
The only possible protection against random acts of evil is random acts of good, carried out by good men with the means to get the job done. When 22-year-old Clara Riddles was drug by her hair through CNN Center last April and shot to death, essayist Bob Allen wrote of the incident “There was a time when a majority of American men would almost surely have come to Clara’s aid. It was a day when men, recognizing the reality of evil, carried weapons that enabled them to stand in the gap for those being unjustly tormented and threatened. Virtually any man on the street could come to the aid of a victim like Clara. (But) that was then; this is now.”
And so it is. According to both statistics and sheer logic, the very notion of gun control is so patently stupid, that only people with too much education could possibly believe it, and it is no accident that for self-described “progressives,” gun control is often at the top of their list. Call me old fashioned, but I much prefer English statesman Edmund Burke’s observation that “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” And when it comes to these random shootings, allowing as many good men possible the ability to shoot back is our only hope for less deadly results in the future.

I’m also a fan of Edward Abbey’s observation:
“If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military, the hired servants of our rulers. Only the government –and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws.”
Many Americans are gun-toting Christians. What happened to the “Thou shall not kill” commandment?
Even if everyone carries a gun, you will never know who the gunman is, until he shoots first, and by the time you react with your own gun, someone would already be killed. Even if everyone carried a gun, the gunman will not be deterred from shooting, because he already has a death wish, and is prepared to go out with a bang like a terrorist.
Please let me clear up some Biblical points.”Thou shalt not kill”,the word ‘Kill’ in Hebrew (Language of the old testament) translates to ‘Murder’. Therefore ‘Exodus 20:13′ reads “Thou shalt not ‘Murder’”. there’s a world of diference between murdering someone in premeditated cold blood, and the taking of a life in self defense or in defense of others!
Also, one of Jesus’ last instructions to his disciples was in ‘Luke 22:36′, where he comanded those who were unarmed to sell their garments if need be and buy a sword!
So, there are provisions set forth in Gods word to take a life and to be armed.
Too many people are under the misconception that Christians are called by God to be meek, and are forbiden to take up violence against legitamate threat or enemy, including many Christians themselves.

No one is claiming that possessing a gun will with 100% percent certainty save your life or ensure no innocent person will be killed. There are no guarantees period. However, these types of shootings have been prematurely stopped by lawfully armed citizens: a mall in Salt Lake City, schools in Pearl, Mississippi, Edinboro, Pennsylvania, and Appalachain Law School Virginia. Untold lives were saved by lawfully armed citizens in these shootings.
When you disarm lawful citizens who are not a threat to society against violent criminals who do not obey laws, who is being protected and who is left vulnerable? Look at gun free zones that have been attacked, and you’ll find your answer.
No amount of laws or “prevention” will ever stop an attack from occuring. However, lawfully armed citizens can help bring these attaacks to a premature end which can save innocent life.

Your logic is flawed. Many convicts interviewed in prison say that they were never afraid of the cops when armed and on the street. They could plan their crimes around the absence of the cops. They were more afraid of armed citizens because the criminals had no way of knowing which law abiding citizens were carrying guns and which weren’t, that is, unless they were in “gun free zones”. Then, the fox is in the hen house.
How much more proof does this country need to allow people to the right to defend themselves and others? These last few tragic events point out the flaws of gun control so clearly, it just boggles the mind how anyone can think they we need MORE gun control. The ignorance that posting a sign is going to make people safer just burns me. Its only makes people FEEL safer, but its a false sense of safety. The only thing that can stop an armed lunatic is an armed citizen. And lets please not say that killing in self defense is un Christian….doing nothing while innocent people die is the greater crime, and far more un Christian.
A shootout is better than a massacre!
“A shootout is better than a massacre!”
bingo.
On the day that police and state are liable in a court of law and I’m able to sue them for negligence for failure to protect the life of a citizen from some psycho, and the supreme court says that the 2nd amendment doesn’t say what it says, only on that day I’ll give up my guns and even start my own gun control group!
Why was the comment “an early American cowboy or even and Indian” used the way it was?
Or even an Indian implies they even an Indian has less right to have used his weapon for protection than the cowboy.
Isn’t it a little dishonest to say that all gun control advocates want to take the guns out of good people’s hands? I am an advocate of gun control mainly for the purpose of keeping guns out of the hands of people who should not be allowed to have them. Saying people who support gun control want to disarm everyone is BS. And saying that the absence of gun control laws would make our country a safer place is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.

Okay, we have conclusion, now we need premisies… Here is where you back that comment up…. Please, I’m waiting.

Don’t know where to begin with such hogwash.
The second amendment insures the people will always have the means (and RIGHT) to resist a tyrannical government.
And you want to give the government the power to control where, when, and IF the supreme authority of this land - the citizen, can do so?
Please go back to school, and re-study history.

There is not one single independent academic study showing any gun control law in this nation as having a positive impact at reducing crime. What difference would it make if laws that are having no impact are repealed?
Since gun control does not have any impact on criminal access and misuse of firearms, supporting and continued passage of more gun control will eventually lead to firearms prohibition for lawful citizens.
Where exactly do you drawl the line in the sand and say no more gun control no matter what?
An excellent commentary on “Gun Control” by Pastor Chuck Baldwin:
http://www.newswithviews.com/baldwin/baldwin419.htm
Disregarding Sigmund Freud’s “A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.,” in the 1952 text “General Introduction to Psychoanalysis” and disregard Sarah Thompson’s 2000 paper titled: “Raging Against Self Defense: A psychiatrist Examines the Anti-Gun Mentality,” one might best define insanity as trying the same thing over and over again, each time expecting different results. If we check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s, October 3, 2003 “First Reports Evaluating the Effectiveness of Strategies for Preventing Violence: Firearms Laws,” we will find that there is “NO EVIDENCE” that ANY gun-control law on the books that has been competently studied can be shown to have accomplished its intended result. Over 20,000 restrictive gun-laws - FOR WHAT????
How about we collect the names of those poor folks advocating we try, try again - so we may first, get them out of the lawmaking process, and secondly, refer them to the proper help for their affliction.
Gun control (weapon control) is immoral because it leaves innocent people more vulnerable to threats to their safety. Weapon controls give bigger and stronger people a bigger tactical advantage over the rest.
Any politician advocating gun control should be arrested and charged with committing crimes against humanity.
