Not a bad showing as a protest vote by Buddy Witherspoon. Due mostly to his aggressive support for amnesty for illegal aliens in 2007, Graham unquestionably remains unpopular among South Carolina conservatives, and Witherspoon’s showing tonight is telling.
It might be worth remembering that during the 1992 Republican presidential primary, incumbent President George H. W. Bush recieved 53% to challenger Pat Buchanan’s 37% in the New Hampshire Primary. Like Witherspoon in his battle with Graham, Buchanan served as a protest vote for conservatives who were dissatisfied with Bush.
Of course, Bush lost the general election to Bill Clinton.
I can tell you right now -Â I will support Graham’s Democratic opponent (looks like it will be Bob Conley as of this writing) as a protest vote in the general election come November. If Barack Obama is looking good in the fall – who knows – the Democrat may have a good chance of winning, if his Party’s presidential nominee continues to gain momentum.
It’s not that I want a Democrat to win (although I can’t see any drastic difference in the damage that might be done, compared to the Republicans), but that I desperately want Lindsey Graham to lose. He simply doesn’t deserve to be a U.S. Senator, and sure as hell doesn’t deserve to represent my state.

All politicians promise what they think voters want to hear. You have to look at their record once in office. Graham’s record and behavior has been deplorable. He’s pandered to the pro amnesty crowd, kissed the behind of Ted Kennedy, and insulted the fine people of South Carolina as bigots. Anyone voting for this jackass will get the Senator they deserve.
I was at the Graham “celebration” last night in Columbia. I had an opportunity to speak to the senator. I congratulated him for his primary win then I told him that my son had been deployed to Iraq Sunday and I was going to ask him if he would look in on the SC boys on his next trip over there but never got the chance. As soon as I mentioned “deployed” Lindsey snatched his hand away (I was shaking his hand) and literally ran away from me. I was absolutely disgusted. He doesn’t deserve to be a senator.
Greg,
It is disgusting and it doesn’t surprise me.
A good friend told me a story about a friend of his, who was wounded in Iraq and was having trouble recieving the benefits he was owed.
This soldier repeatedly called Lindsey Graham’s office to see what could be done about his dilemma. After repeated run-arounds, a Graham spokesman finally explained that the Senator was too busy campaigning on the road with John McCain at the moment to address his concerns.
Oh, but Lindsey “supports the troops.” In my opinion Graham, Bush and McCain abuses them.

Why is it that the greasy politicians like Lindsey Graham always win? I’m so disgusted about the whole illegal immigration nightmare and these stinking politicians. Maybe the answer is just to bail out of this country and let it turn in to a third world hellhole…….sick and tired…

I would have never believed it if I hadn’t seen it for myself but your friend is right. Graham doesn’t care about the troops or the people of SC… until he needs their votes. He is too busy being John McCain and Ted Kennedys lap dog. George Bush is too arrogant to admit he made a mistake with Iraq and thinks if he “stays the course” maybe things will get better and his legacy will be saved. I have been thinking this for a long time and last night proved it to me. GOD help our troops because these people don’t care unless a camera is on them.
We’re from the upstate and the folks up here feel the same way. There was NO campaigning by either canditate in the upstate. Maybe Witherspoon (whom never heard of) should visit up here and campaign next time.
Graham is deplorable. No way we’re voting for him or the dem candidate. Will also hold our noses while voting for McCain. It’s going to be a long 4/6 years regardless.
To me this is a great example of how ignorant most Americans are regarding politics. If the MSM doesn’t report it or talk about it most Americans have no idea and probably don’t care but boy do they vote. Get out the vote! We are in a genuine mess in this country. We have a financial debacle unfolding that rivals anything we’ve seen in at least 75 years and maybe the worst ever. A war that seems to have no end and looks to expand and a social fabric that is unraveling and creating a Bosnian like structure. I guess it would take having no food and massive job losses to get any kind of real reaction. Sad but that is the story of truly brutal history. L Graham is as much a part of that as any.
