A look at the recent victories of North Carolina Republicans Walter Jones and BJ Lawson, whose unique campaigns were inextricably linked to, and in part defined by, that of 2008 GOP presidential candidate Ron Paul:

I really fail to understand why you place Pat Buchanan on such a high pedestal. I have visited his website, and my conclusion is that he is a mean old man who institutionalizes closed-mindedness. According to him, true happiness can only come from one’s biological family, and true morality can only come from organized Christianity. Naturally, he is one of the most homophobic mainstream political commentators I have yet to run across. If you don’t believe me, check out his column “America after Christianity”.
I absolutely love Patrick Buchanan. He came to my little textile-mill town back when the Feds were trying to send our jobs to Mexico (thru NAFTA, etc) and passionately defended us. He has always been a strong voice for Southern culture, our traditional liberties as well our Western Civilization. God bless Pat!
Southern culture and traditional values, yes. Western Civilization, no. He doesn’t recognize the accomplishments of the latter before the advent of Christianity. The immense philosophical and moral contributions of the Greeks are alien to him.
Brad, Pat recently wrote a book called ‘The Death of the West’ - I don’t know how much stronger you can get in defense of Western Civilization. I understand your point but feel many of those values and contributions you refer to were absorded in different ways into Western Civ. For example, Christmas has maintained many of the pre-Christian Nordic traditions. Greek thought is still there, right now though our civilization is in decline everywhere and folks have more or less forgotten not just about the Greeks, but also the Roman Republic, the Carloginians, the Irish monks who kept the literary traditions alive, etc.
Well spoken, Palmetto Patrol. You may have a good point concerning the decline of the West. I’ve ordered Russell Kirk’s book, The Conservative Mind, from the local library. I may check out Buchanan’s book, as well. Regards, Brad
I meant Palmetto Patriot, not Patrol. I need some more coffee. I apologize for the typo, sir. Sincerely, Brad
